Rosemary Extract Carnosic Acid Stability in Kibble Processing: A B2B Formulation Guide

If you are formulating dry kibble today, you already know that the antioxidant choice affects three things at once: shelf life, label appeal, and regulatory exposure across your destination markets.

Natural rosemary extract — standardized to carnosic acid — has become the default choice for premium and super-premium kibble lines in the US, EU, and parts of Asia. But it has a known weakness that catches even experienced formulators off guard: carnosic acid is not thermally stable. How you handle it during extrusion and post-extrusion drying determines whether your finished kibble hits the 18-month shelf-life claim or falls short by month nine.

This guide walks through the practical levers that drive carnosic acid retention in kibble — and the supplier documentation that lets you hold the line.

What happens to carnosic acid at kibble-processing temperatures

Standard kibble extrusion runs at 110–140 °C for 30–90 seconds, with the die exit often higher. Post-extrusion drying adds another 10–20 minutes at 90–120 °C.

Independent published studies (including work cited in the Journal of Food Science and EFSA dossiers on rosemary extract) show that unprotected carnosic acid can lose 20–40% activity under these conditions. The actual loss in your process depends on three variables: residence time, peak temperature, and the carrier system the extract is delivered in.

The good news: with the right extract specification and the right application point, carnosic acid retention above 85% is achievable at commercial scale. The bad news: the cheapest rosemary extract on the market will not get you there.

Four specification levers that move retention

When you talk to suppliers, ask for these four numbers in writing, not on a verbal promise:

1. Carnosic acid assay, not “total phenolic”
Total phenolic content includes carnosol and rosmarinic acid. Both have antioxidant activity, but neither carries the same regulatory recognition as carnosic acid in most export markets. For US/EU pet food, ask specifically for HPLC carnosic acid at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, or 25% — not “5:1 extract” with no marker.

2. Carrier system
Oil-based carriers (sunflower oil, MCT) and emulsified powder systems protect carnosic acid better than dry carriers during extrusion. If your supplier only offers a 100% maltodextrin or silica carrier, ask why — and benchmark it against an emulsified version before committing.

3. Particle size and homogeneity
A d90 below 100 µm helps the extract disperse evenly in the preconditioner. Uneven dispersion creates local hot spots in the extruder that destroy activity. Ask for a laser-diffraction particle-size report with the COA.

4. Third-party HPLC verification, not just supplier QC
A buyer-nominated independent lab (SGS, Eurofins, Intertek, or a Chinese lab such as Pony or SGS-CSTC) removes the conflict of interest. Ask for the lab name and the chromatogram, not just a number.

Where to add the extract in your process

For most kibble lines, the practical sequence is:

  • Preconditioner: Standard ingredient mixing, with the rosemary extract added at 0.05–0.15% of the formula (depending on target shelf life and competing antioxidants in the formula).
  • Extruder: Avoid direct injection into the die zone if possible. Side-door addition after the preconditioner and before the extruder inlet typically preserves more activity than post-extrusion top-coating alone.
  • Post-extrusion: A second top-coat of rosemary extract in oil or emulsion form can add 5–10% retention, but only if the carrier system tolerates the coating drum temperature.

A common mistake is adding the extract to the meal before preconditioning only. Without a top-coat or a properly emulsified carrier, the carnosic acid you started with is largely gone by the time the kibble hits the bag.

What to put in writing with your supplier

Before signing a supply contract for a year, request:

  • A lot-specific COA with carnosic acid assay by HPLC-UV
  • A chromatogram you can read (peak at 230 nm or 284 nm depending on method)
  • Heavy-metal and microbiology panels on the same lot
  • A 12-month stability statement at 25 °C / 60% RH in sealed packaging
  • A processing recommendation letter for kibble application

The last item is where most supply relationships fall apart. A supplier that knows pet food will provide this without being asked. A supplier that knows only commodity extracts will not.

A note on label and regulatory position

In the US, rosemary extract is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use in pet food at typical use levels. In the EU, it falls under feed additive regulations (Reg. EC 1831/2003) and is permitted as a technological additive (antioxidant) in complete feed. Always confirm current status with your regulatory team for your specific destination market — the rules do change.

Carnosic acid retention is not a marketing story. It is a shelf-life, label-claim, and consumer-trust story. If your supplier cannot walk you through the four specification levers above with documentation, the cost of switching suppliers later is much higher than the cost of selecting the right one now.
