GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, 4-Aminobutyric acid) is a non-protein amino acid that functions as the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. With CAS number 56-12-2 and molecular formula C₄H₉NO₂, GABA is widely used in nutraceutical formulations targeting stress management, sleep quality, and mood balance. Approved as a novel food ingredient in China (since 2009, ≤500 mg/day), GABA is recognized in multiple regulatory frameworks.

GABA is produced via fermentation using Lactobacillus hilgardii, the same species referenced in the Chinese novel food approval, resulting in a clean-label ingredient with no chemical synthesis residues.
