Overview
Nourish Ingredients is a China-based botanical ingredient sourcing partner for buyers working in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) manufacturing, herbal medicine, and pharmaceutical development. Nourish Ingredients is not the manufacturer: sourcing is coordinated with qualified production partners, and the support provided covers specification matching, documentation review, and shipment coordination against the buyer’s own requirements.
The botanicals covered on this page are handled as ingredients with defined marker compounds and defined documentation, not as finished products intended for any particular use. Buyers remain responsible for how a material is used, and for the regulatory status of that use in their own market.
Botanical Ingredients Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Herbal Medicine
Manufacturers in this segment usually work from a defined formulation and need the botanical material to match a marker profile that stays consistent from lot to lot. Enquiries typically start from a classical formula, a granule preparation, or a concentrated decoction specification.
Botanical materials commonly requested for this segment, and the marker compounds usually specified for them:
- Panax ginseng — ginsenosides, with Rg1 and Rb1 among the markers that are quantified
- Ginkgo biloba — flavonol glycosides and terpene lactones
- Rhodiola rosea — salidroside and rosavins
- Valeriana officinalis — valerenic acids
- Serenoa repens — total fatty acids and sterols
Where a buyer works from a traditional raw material profile, the extract can be matched to the marker levels the buyer specifies, subject to what the production partner is able to supply and document.
Botanical Starting Materials and Intermediates
Botanical extracts are also used as starting materials or intermediates in pharmaceutical development. In these projects the specification is set by the buyer’s own quality and regulatory requirements, and the documentation package is reviewed before an order is confirmed. Enquiries in this segment generally fall into three groups:
- Standardized marker extracts — for example Ginkgo biloba, Rhodiola rosea or Serenoa repens, where the buyer defines the marker profile and the assay method
- High-purity single compounds — for example coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) or PQQ disodium salt, where purity and impurity profile are specified by the buyer
- Classical TCM botanicals — for example Panax ginseng or Valeriana officinalis, supplied to a defined marker specification
Supporting analytical documents — such as HPLC chromatograms, residual solvent reports and microbiological results — can be requested for review, subject to what the production partner holds for that lot.
Specification Matching
Most enquiries in this segment begin with a specification rather than a catalogue item. The following points are normally confirmed before a production partner is proposed:
- Botanical name, plant part, and origin
- Extraction solvent and extraction ratio
- Marker compound, and the assay method used to quantify it
- Contaminant limits relevant to the market where the finished product will be sold
- Packaging, labelling, and storage requirements
- The documentation the buyer’s quality unit needs before the material can be released
Where a requirement cannot be met, this is stated before an order is placed rather than after.
Documentation Review
Documentation is reviewed with the buyer before an order is confirmed. The following documents can be provided for review where the production partner holds them:
- Certificate of Analysis (COA) — per lot, covering the marker assay and the parameters agreed in the specification
- MSDS / SDS — for handling, transport, and storage
- Analytical method summaries — see HPLC and UV methods used in botanical extract quality verification
- Third-party testing reports — where independent testing has been carried out for a lot
- Stability data — where the production partner holds it for the material
- TSE / BSE declaration — where relevant to the material and to the market
What to look for in these documents is set out in How to Read a Botanical Extract COA and in COA, MSDS & Third-Party Testing for Botanical Extracts.
Regulatory filings. Depending on the target market, documentation such as a Drug Master File (DMF) or a Certificate of Suitability (CEP) may be relevant to a submission. Whether such a filing exists for a given material, and who holds it, is confirmed on a project-specific basis; Nourish Ingredients does not hold or file these documents directly.
Certificates and their attribution. Where a production partner certificate is shared — for example GMP, ISO, FSSC 22000, BRC, EU Organic, USDA Organic, FAMI-QS, Kosher or Halal — it is provided together with the certificate holder name, the certified scope, and the validity period, so that the buyer can verify it directly with the issuing body. Certificate availability, holder and scope depend on the production partner and on the specific material, and are confirmed per enquiry.
Parameters Typically Reviewed on a Botanical Extract COA
| Parameter | Method | How it is reported |
| Assay (marker compound) | HPLC / UV-Vis | Reported per lot against the specification agreed with the buyer |
| Loss on drying | Gravimetric | Reported per lot |
| Ash | Gravimetric | Reported per lot |
| Heavy metals (Pb, As, Cd, Hg) | ICP-MS | Reported per lot; limits follow the specification agreed for the target market |
| Total plate count | Plate count | Reported per lot |
| Yeast and mould | Plate count | Reported per lot |
| E. coli | Enrichment | Reported as present or absent per lot |
| Salmonella | Enrichment | Reported as present or absent per lot |
| Residual solvents | GC | Reported per lot where solvent extraction is used |
| Pesticide residues | GC-MS / LC-MS | Reported per lot where required for the target market |
